GAWINTER@aol.com RQR: Golems Eric Rowe RQR: RQ Con 2 Headline News ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Gregory C. Walsh" Date: Fri, 6 Jan 1995 15:59:45 -0500 Subject: RQR: RQR Golems I did golems in my world. I had metal golems in the "Citadel" (a bad guy hang out), and the dwarves knew how to make stone golems, seeing how they had master stone shapers. I had that Golems were abhorent creations - they required shriving a soul. THis means you make a golem spirit : you take a magic spirit or better yet the soul of some sacrificed unfortunate, and you break it up, shaving off the permanent power. The undead like spirit remains, with an intellect but no pow, is bound into the statue/matrix, which has a premanipulated animate stone/form set set into the body, tied to the binding enchant. So Golems needed to be "charged up", kind of like undead robots. Oh, they would have magic point matrixes. So normally they would sit around, not moving, and when something triped their alarms, they cast their animate/form set, and did their duty. I would have them damage like objects. Statues were not big - bigger stone golems were more expensive to animate. I used the same concept for one of my favorite villians. He was a agent of the Citadel ... for the longest time people thought he was a human or orc, or something, always had his hood drawn. He was a Hellion who had learn animate wood and form set wood. He had a wood body, hellion globe head. If cornered, he would leave important things deep inside the torso of the manequin, detach his head and float out the window. THe part would search the "fake" body, and leave. Later he could come back and get the goods. They eventually caught on. Take it easy, Greg (the GM now running the mounted campaign) ------------------------------ From: Scotty2405@aol.com Date: Fri, 6 Jan 1995 23:40:58 -0500 Subject: RQR: Golems? From a campaign that I ran -- the PCs wanted some relics found only on the Plateau of Statues. Golems were not explained in terms of creation -- certainly beyond the admittedly formidable powers of the PCs -- so I wouldn't worry about how to make them. If I had to make something up, I would say that it was a weird Gnome/Spirit bound into a statue. There were three types of Golems -- Stone, Bronze, and Iron. All had a size of about 25 and strengths of 50, 75, and 100 respectively. They were meant to kill instantly, though their Att%s were low. They did not parry, and attacked only once per round. The problem for the PCs was that Stone Golems took only 1/2 damage from slashing/piercing weapons, and bronze weapons that scored a hit on them would take d3 AP in damage (to the weapon) each time. Hit points per location were arbitrarily assigned. I forget what they were, but it was high. Bronze golems were immune to bronze weapons -- iron or better to damage, and then the iron weapons took damage at the same rate. Iron golems were damaged only be extremely enchanted weapons (Crush, TrueWeapon, etc.) Any weapon which scored a hit took damage, regardless of construction. They presented a lovely problem for PCs in a high-powered campaign. Only after they lost a number of valued retainers (and had the lead PC resurrected) did they realize that they could have avoided the golems altogether. Much like Zombies, their senses aren't too sharp, and if they're left alone, or can't sense the target, they won't do anything. I enjoyed them -- they gave overconfident PCs a real sense of fear, something that most GMs like at least every once in a while. You the enchanter will then be able to use control xxx to make it do your bidding. This opens the door for the recreation of the famous jewish Golem legend where the spirit/golem goes mad and wreaks terrible destruction. ------------------------------ From: Eric Rowe Date: Sat, 7 Jan 1995 17:48:19 -0800 Subject: RQR: RQ Con 2 Headline News ORLANTH THUNDEROUS UPSET Due to suspected Lunar symathies of the Convention staff Orlanth, King of the Gods, has opened the Western Storm Gates. One mighty storm after another is assaulting the Convention site. Though still reasonably warm, visitors to the once sunny state should bring lots of rain gear. The Convention staff is planning a series of sacrifices in hopes of appeasing the angered god. VACANCIES AT GEO'S There are still many rooms available at the Convention site. Given the dangers of local weather conditions and the need for sleep despite the continual entertainment to be offered, it is strongly suggested that attendees, even those in the bay area, obtain rooms. That way you won't miss anything and the Convention won't be visited by Room Tax Demons. Please call 1-800-223-7111 and ask for RQ Rooms.
