Do not engage in a point-by-point analysis or rebuttal of another person's message. It is too confusing for others to follow, qualifies as nit-picking, and it usually leads to flame wars. 4. TABLE OF CONTENTS Donald Walli RQR: RQ2 and variable spells Nigel Smith RQR: RQ2 and variable spells ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Donald Walli Date: Tue, 13 Dec 1994 14:31:14 -0500 (EST) Subject: RQR: RQ2 and variable spells OK, I'll give this another shot. I'm curious about splitting variable-POW spells *specifically* because of the example given in the RQ2 rules under both Bladesharp and Bludgeon, which says that you can cast a Bl* at, say, POW 4 and get a Bl*-1 on *four* different weapons. Now, I can see where this might be really useful for, say, Kali or some similar multi-limbed Hindu deity, but for your typical humanoid RQ character, this is pretty much useless. Sooooo, I posited: "Hmmm... maybe this means that you can, say, cast a Bl*-4 and get Bl*-2 on two different weapons--perhaps even some that you're not holding!" I can't remember now if the spell was range=touch, but I don't think it is. (anyone have the RQ2 rules handy?) Thus the example I gave before: "Hey, comrade--c`mere, lemme give you a little edge in this upcoming scrap..." I'll try to get the rules away from my GM for a bit and read up on Bl*, Multispell, etc. to see if I can get any clearer examples or other insights. On a similar note: how do people out there handle spellcasting and melee or missile combat within a given round? (Ex.: cast Speedart, loose arrow, prep arrow for next round... -or- poke with spear, get poked, use remaining 8 SR to try to cast Heal...) Thus the example >I gave before: "Hey, comrade--c`mere, lemme give you a little edge in >this upcoming scrap..." Whoops, that'll teach me not to check the rulebook before answering! You're right, and I can't see any erratta saying otherwise. The weapon effecting spells are all ranged - 80m in line of sight. So it appears that you could split your targets on a single casting. But you can still cast only one spell per MR without using Multispell. RQ3 doesn't seem to allow this division of effect. >On a similar note: how do people out there handle spellcasting and >melee or missile combat within a given round? (Ex.: cast Speedart, >loose arrow, prep arrow for next round... -or- poke with spear, >get poked, use remaining 8 SR to try to cast Heal...) This depends on whether you are engaged in melee or not. If so, you can either attack and defend normally _or_ defend normally and 'attack' magically (including all spells eg. Heal, Shimmer, BS*, Disrupt etc.). This is because your strike rank shows when you can initiate an attack, but said attack is considered to take the whole round to perform. - P17 of RQ2. If not engaged with an opponent a character can have multiple actions, but remember it takes 5 SR to change weapons, or change from weapon to spell and vice versa - this is because most spells need a focus. Spells cast on yourself seem to be an exception -Heal, etc-, since they are unfocused, and spells cast on a previously readied weapon do not incur the 5 SR penalty as long as the focus is carved on the weapon. - also P17 For all actions, just keep going until you run out of strike ranks! Anyone else have any other takes on this?
